Time to let go of PPT; Past Patriots Trauma

Meme from memegenerator.com.

Maybe 2020 will end up having a modicum of redeeming value for BillsMafia when Buffalo takes on the New England Patriots at Bills Stadium at 1 p.m ET on Sunday. We can only hope so…. after all, it’s been over two decades since the Bills were able to defeat the Patriots on a consistent basis. Or any basis for that matter… save for a meaningless end-of-season game or when Jacoby Brissett played once for Tom Brady.

The Patriots have destroyed the Bills with every possible permutation of putridity and taken at least a decade off our age expectancy by making us bitter and hostile fans. The scar tissue is now attached to the bone and hanging on for dear life. We aren’t letting go of our belief about the Bills ability to self destruct at a moment’s notice against the Patriots* without a fight.

It is so 2020 for this to be the year the Patriots start out 2-4 and in third place in the division as we near the halfway point in the season. A casual NFL fan might look at the Bills 5-2 record and think they should probably defeat the Patriots, no problem.

However, as only our traumatized fan base can understand, there is no ‘Joy in Mudville‘ when the Patriots come to town. No fan base has been tormented by one coach and quarterback who shall remain nameless more than BillsMafia has been by the two you-know-whos.

With one you-know-who off to another team hoping to recreate Peyton Manning’s last two seasons in Denver, the other you-know-hoodie remains at the helm of the Patriots and in doing so continues to play the role of a Heath Ledger type boogeyman for our fan base.

Furthermore, it’s going to take more than one soul-crushing defeat of the Patriots to mitigate the damage done to our tender BillsMafia souls over the course of the last 20 years. However, let me be the first to state without hesitation that should the Bills defeat the Patriots on Sunday, we’d be off to a good start.

Don’t expect Bills fans to be rational about assessing the potential for their favorite team to be victorious over the Patriots. The amount of psychic trauma inflicted on our fan base can only be measured by the oceans of tears shed over one heart wrenching loss after another.

I lived through the Bills of the 1970s and the decade that was lost to the Miami Dolphins. It was horrible to experience. I’m only just now getting over it because I ran out of room in my brain hating the Patriots so much.

So when Trey Wingo of ESPN was a guest on One Bills Drive this week and stated it was time for us to come out of the closet and bask in the sunshine of a more talented roster than the Patriots have at the moment… you could hear a collective gasp from BillsMafia across cyberspace.

What is this thing you call “confidence” we are supposed to have about the Bills being in a stronger position going into this game?

The only thing most Bills fans are confident about when it comes to the Patriots is that at some point the Bills will find a way to lose the game. You cannot easily undo that type of psychic response in the mind of football fanatics who love the Buffalo Bills. We’ve been triggered and reinforced to expect losing regardless of what pundits say we should do.

However, if the Bills come out and crush the Patriots on Sunday, THAT might get our attention. It would definitely send us into a state of delirium that could potentially be dangerous, especially if we are operating machinery of any kind. At least prepare yourselves for the possibility of a positive outcome so you’re not sent into a fugue state if it happens.

Our past response of crawling into a hole after the nasty New England team destroys our souls for the umpteenth time may no longer be necessary. What will be necessary is for us to begin to pull the blanket back just a smidgen and allow some sunlight to shine on our collective BillsMafia face.

Maybe 2020 won’t completely suck after all.
