On November 14th last year, it was announced that Joe Brady would take over as offensive coordinator. Many Bills fans were curious how the team’s sputtering offense would look with Brady at the helm. Well, it has not taken long to see the results. The Bills offense is more balanced than ever, and since Brady’s been at the helm the team is 9-2. The absolute clinic Joe Brady has put on in the red zone is a key factor to the success.
The Bills coordinator recently flashed his creativity this past Thursday night in Miami. On an early 4th down in the red zone, Brady called one of his favorite and best concepts, “Boomerang Mesh Traffic.”
Pre-snap Curtis Samuel motions in from the bunch to create window dressing while taking Jalen Ramsey out of the play. James Cook releases under the unblocked defender, and since Miami is in man, David Long (#11) gets caught up in the mesh concept in the middle of the field, and the rest is history.
Joe Brady has also used this man coverage killer, numerous other times last season, just with a few wrinkles.
Here it is week 11 of last season against the Jets. Instead of a wide receiver motioning, it’s James Cook. Note: often the motion is used to confirm if the defense is in man or zone coverage. Most of the time if a linebacker or corner follows the exact movement of the motion, it is man, while if little movement occurs, it is likely zone.
Brady called it four weeks later against Dallas as well. Once again, the window dressing looks a bit different.
Brady even ran this back in 2020 as the coordinator of Carolina. Again, it looks just slightly different.
Joe Brady’s red zone creativity is truly impressive. How Brady can use his favorite mesh concept, and make it look different each time, is a characteristic of an elite offensive coordinator. Expect to see Brady’s mesh concept at least a few more times this season.
