It has taken eight years, and almost an entire cycle of consoles, but Microsoft and Xbox players finally get a premier MLB game. No 2K is not coming back, but instead a surprise from the opposition. Playstation studios has announced that they will release MLB 21 The Show for PS4/5 and Xbox one and Series X this coming April. On Monday, they released the cover with Fernando Tatis Jr. on it, and man, does it look great.
The last premier MLB game to be released for Xbox was MLB 2K13. 2K interactive announced during that offseason that they would not be renewing their MLB contract and that they would be done making MLB games. At the time, I was happy because I was disappointed in the gameplay of 2K. In my head, I thought that EA Sports would come back and make great MLB games again. That didn’t happen, and the only MLB game that Xbox players got was RBI Baseball. An awful game that is an embarrassment to have the MLB name associated with it. When indie games with no real-life association do better than a game that is supposed to be a simulation, that is a problem. I am super glad that we could play Super Mega Baseball as a placeholder until MLB games came back. Now we get the best MLB game over on the green side.
What a guy to pick for the cover in Fernando Tatis Jr too. This is a guy I wrote about last year and loved how he was making the game fun again. Tatis is a 22-year-old who is turning the game on his head, and he is ready to be that guy you love or hate. The teaser trailer was amazing, with him saying all about him going to continue to break the unwritten rules. “El Nino” will also be the youngest ever to grace the cover of MLB The Show.
I can not wait for this. I will be saving my money to buy this game. I played so much The Show growing up, and now I get to play as Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, and other great stars I like. Apr. 20 we play ball.
