The Buffalo Bills Enter Free Agency Trusting the Process

The Buffalo Bills enter free agency from an incredible position of strength.

Josh Allen signs for record-guaranteed money. Gregory Rousseau, Khalil Shakir, and Terrel Bernard all land four-year deals—big money, long-term commitments. The Bills have been telling us how they feel about this team all offseason, and we haven’t listened enough. We’ve been caught up in names like Myles Garrett, Trey Hendrickson, and DK Metcalf, but Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott have been clear from the jump: This team is close. They’re not far off. They were three points from moving on to the Super Bowl.

Yeah, they know they need talent across the board. And maybe, even today, they take a big swing—maybe they make a move for a big-name trade or free agent. But this offseason tells me that the Bills are sizing up for something bigger. They locked up their quarterback, got the cap figured out for the next couple of years, and most importantly, locked in their core guys. That’s been the priority from the start.

And yeah, these are big deals, but they’re not unmanageable. As the cap keeps rising, if these players keep improving, these contracts will only look better and better. What I think we’re about to see from the Bills in free agency is a very measured, calculated approach—adding talent at multiple levels, especially on defense. I see them going after a Jonathan Allen for the interior, adding a couple of edge rushers to the rotation. Maybe they go big at CB2 (Ward? Slay?). There are a lot of ways this could play out.

What do I know? The Bills don’t think they were lacking in talent. They believe in this roster. And maybe that means the move they need isn’t one big splash, but an influx of multiple talented guys who fill specific roles. Because at the end of the day, improving at multiple spots might be the real difference between making the Super Bowl or sitting around next offseason wondering, what if?

Shoutout to Brandon Beane—hell of an offseason so far. Free agency is about to be a ride.
