There was a feeling of another loss creeping up on the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night.
After watching a 4-1 lead slip away, the Blue Jays (6-8) found themselves tied 4-4 heading into the bottom of the 10th inning.
But after a bunt by catcher Danny Jansen moved outfielder Anthony Alford over from second to third to lead off the inning, and consecutive walks to second baseman Cavan Biggio and shortstop Bo Bichette loaded the bases, that feeling of another loss slowly faded away.
Third baseman Travis Shaw laced a walk-off single to right field on a 2-2 count to give the Blue Jays a 5-4 win over Miami Marlins (7-4) at Sahlen Field in Buffalo, NY.
“I wasn’t necessarily selling out on a breaking ball, but in the back of my mind, I was making sure that I was not going to be early on the breaking ball,” Shaw said. “After the one sinker down and in, I knew that was going to be a tough pitch to get to the outfield. So I was sitting breaking ball pretty much the whole at-bat until there were two strikes.”
This was the first Major League Baseball game and win in Buffalo in over 100 years.
After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning, the Blue Jays bats came alive in the bottom of the 6th inning.
They saw back-to-back doubles from Jansen and second baseman Cavan Biggio, followed by a three-run home run by shortstop Bo Bichette that ricocheted off of the left-field light tower to give Toronto a 3-1 lead.
“We needed that,” Shaw said. “We’ve hit some balls really well, right at some people, and we haven’t been able to come up with that big hit with guys in scoring position, so for Bo to get three runs on one swing was a jump start for us.”
Bichette’s home run gives him three on the season to go along with 9 RBIs. The Blue Jays now have 16 long balls on the season.
The Blue Jays would tack on another run on a single by Biggio in the bottom of the 7th inning to extend their lead to 4-1, but the bullpen fell apart in the top of the 9th inning.
RHP Anthony Bass served up a three-run home run to Marlins catcher Francisco Cervelli that sent the game into extra innings.
“Coming in we really didn’t know what to expect. I kind of expected to be underwhelmed. But like I said, the Blue Jays did an amazing job of making this feel like a big league atmosphere,” Bichette said,” I think that helped us go out there with energy that we’re going to be comfortable and were going to feel like we’re at home. It helped us a lot.”
The Blue Jays return to the field on Wednesday night with the hopes of another win resting on the shoulders of 2017 first round draft pick Nate Pearson. The rookie has no decisions on the year, but has compiled 10 strikeouts and a 2.70 ERA.
First pitch is set 6:37PM.
