On the heels of extending Head Coach Sean McDermott just yesterday, Brandone Beane and the Bills are still locking up their core and trying to ensure a future of sustained success.
It was just reported by Adam Schefter, that the Buffalo Bills and Left Tackle Dion Dawkins have agreed to terms on a 4 year contract extension worth $60 million. This new deal locks up the Bills’ anchor on the offensive line through the 2024 season.
This is exciting news for the Bills as Dawkins has shown improvement every season since being drafted back in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Dawkins has proven between his gritty play and raw talent, he can be a long term option to protect Josh Allen’s blindside. Having started 43 games the last 3 seasons and earning a “C” on his chest in 2019, he’s someone the team trusts. He’s been an anchor at the most important position on the offense line, is just 26 years old and has developed into quite the exuberant personality, one which all of Buffalo rallies behind.
Dawkins was a 3 year starter at Temple, where he played Left Tackle. But when invited to the Senior Bowl, Dawkins was listed and played as a guard. He wanted to show scouts he was versatile and could be an NFL caliber player at any position on the offensive line. That draft, the Buffalo Bills took Dawkins at 63rd overall to replace Cordy Glenn on their line. A pick many at the time considered to be a great value.
His catchphrase, “You already Shnow” resonates throughout Buffalo after every pancake block executed or big hole opened. Paired with the nickname”The Shnowman”, Dawkins has developed fun alter-ego.
As to where the name came from, Dawkins was interviewed by BuffaloBills.com and provided the following answer to, "Where did the Shnowman come from?":
"I was in prep school and I said it one time and the guys kept questioning it. [They would say] ‘What’s shnow?’ I was like, if they’re questioning it, then everyone else will question it and then means it will draw a little bit more attention to myself as a big guy. So, I just kept it going. I kept it because as a big guy, I have to do different things to be that type of player. Wide receivers and running backs catch balls and make plays…but for a lineman you have to move different [to define your personality]."
I am all the way bought in on this deal. Dawkins might not be a top 5 LT in the league (yet!), he has the potential and physical tools to keep growing and improving. The deal now makes Dawkins the fifth highest paid LT in the NFL behind Laremy Tunsil, Anthony Castanzo, Taylor Lewan and Nate Solder. He earned this deal, and with the positional value of LT growing by year, it’s a better deal than some might think and should prove to hold a lot of value.
Let’s hope Brandon Beane and the Bills’ front office continues to lock down our core group of guys, as he has done with McD and the Shnowman the last 24 hours. Tre White, Josh Allen and Matt Milano are all primed to get PAID next and I hope it’s by the Bills.
