Is it safe to tame a baby opossum?

I know that the obvious answer to this is no, but I need all of us to pool our brains together and find a way to make this work.

I’ve been back home for a few days now, and was in the mindset to find a cat to take back to Pittsburgh (we all know my struggles with that) I was walking outside earlier today when I found the cutest creature I have ever seen in my entire life, a baby opossum.

Look at this little guy.

Plus he would match the opossum tattoo I already have on my arm.

Maybe it’s because I’ve been playing Pokémon again, but I want to take them with me everywhere I go. I want them to sit on my shoulder like a parrot to a pirate.

Now I get this probably isn’t the safest thing I could ever do, but there has to be a way we can make this work. There’s this guy I see on Reels (gross I know) who just picks up all these crazy animals in the Everglades, including opossums.

I have no idea how to take care of one but I will do whatever necessary steps it would take. Like can I take them to a vet, what do they eat, and should I be concerned about rabies?

I need to figure out a way to get this baby opossum to trust me and join me on my adventure. I will pitch some ideas here, but I need to hear your feedback on this all.

Pretend to be their mother

Now, this idea may look silly and you are right it is silly. But with that being said it could work.

For all of you who are visual learners, here is what this could look like.

I think with enough time, I could trick this critter into joining me and then slowly break it to them that I am indeed not an opossum. By that point, I am hoping we have a strong enough bond where it isn’t a big deal.

I know building a relationship on lies is a terrible idea, but I feel like it could work on a baby opossum.

Half a madalion

If you thought the last idea was dumb I have something even better.

I give this little guy half a medallion necklace and I have the other half. I tell them once he’s ready to find me, we can one day connect our medallions together and be reunited.

Now, I have no idea how they would then make it to Pittsburgh, but crazier things have happened. This would also make a phenomenal movie if we were able to figure this out.

Force

This is my last option. I want this little dude to choose me, and want to come to Pittsburgh with me.

The last thing I want to do is to catch them and have them (hopefully) eventually be my pal. I have no idea how long it takes for opossums to grow up, but I don’t want to lose these younger years with them.

Side note, I just learned baby opossums are called joeys and I need them even more now.

This idea would either be me trapping them or finding a way to subdue them with some sort of tranquilizer. I feel like this plan is also starting this relationship off on the wrong foot.

Your thoughts?

First is this something safe, and attainable?

Also, what would be my best option to go and make them my friend?

Or should I just keep trying to get a cat?
