Here is a new blog where I will be looking at the Celtic’s season week by week through a detailed and light hearted lens. Expect over-reactions, team vibe checks, MVP updates on Jayson Tatum, a point tracker on Blake Griffin, and more!
The Green Team
The Celtics now sit at 6-3 and are currently the 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. This week they suffered an overtime loss to the red hot Cavaliers on Wednesday, but grabbed two wins against the Bulls and Knicks on Friday and Saturday night.
Head coach Joe Mazzulla is starting to get more comfortable with his rotations and it has showed this past week. The Jays, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, are always expected to post great numbers, but what might be most impressive about the Celtics lineups is the productivity coming from Malcom Brogdon, Sam Hauser, and the combination of reserve big men.
Jayson Tatum MVP?
Tatum has been playing out of his mind to start his 6th season in the NBA. After coming up just short in the NBA Finals a season ago. Tatum spent all offseason working to make sure he and the Celtics get back to the game’s biggest stage. Tatum is averaging an impressive 30 PPG, 8 RPG, and 4.2 APG this season while also being very stout on the defensive end. Moreover, the St. Louis product will probably find himself in the MVP conversation all season long.
Furthermore Jayson Tatum broke another Celtics franchise record to start the season. He scored 104 points in the team’s first three games, clearing Larry Bird’s previous record of 96 points. Tatum has also already posted 3 monster double double’s this season. He recorded 22 double doubles last season and at this rebounding rate he should smash that number.
Brogdon 6th Man of the Year?
Next is the newcomer Malcom Brogdon. Brad Stevens, President of Basketball operations, got Malcom Brodgon on the cheap in a trade deal with the Indiana Pacers this summer. Brogdon has been exactly what this already immensely talented Celtics team needed. He was brought in to be an additional playmaker on this roster and he has done exactly that plus some! Coming off the bench in every game, he is averaging 14.9 PPG, 3.8 APG, and shooting 49% from the field. In addition, he is doing all of this in just 24 minutes per game as a reserve.
