Sunday night’s AEW Revolution failed to deliver the boom that Kenny Omega promised, however the PPV exceeded high expectations.
Not since the prime of The Rock, Undertaker, Mankind, etc. have I been as excited for a wrestling PPV. I, like many others, fell away from wrestling as I approached adulthood, but AEW has given me a reason to be a fan again.
Expectations for Revolution were quite high with Omega’s declaration of an Exploding Barbed Wire Death Match. The return of Sting was more than enough to sell me on the event, but the added allure of a 6-way ladder match, made it must watch.
Myself and Jake decided to breakdown each match as there were truly no duds! Check it out below
Young Bucks retain Tag Team Championship over Jericho & MJF
Ty B: This was a great way to start off the night. This feud has been brewing over the past few weeks and boiled over at the culmination of a beat down on the Young Bucks’ father. That emotion came out early in the fight with the Young Bucks essentially jumping the Inner Circle members.
That energy carried throughout the fight and almost got the Young Bucks into some trouble after back-to-back Walls of Jericho’s. Eventually the Young Bucks overcame the Wardlow interference en route to victory.
The big takeaway is the “War Council” the Inner Circle will be having this Wednesday. MJF did an amazing job in the promo they cut for that later in the night and you can see the heel growing within him.
Jake Majka: It wasn’t time for the Bucks’ reign to end just yet. There is still a larger story at play with the Good Brothers that we need to get through. Having the Bucks as champions makes sure that will remain an A story in the tag team division and that feud has a lot of chance to be one of AEW’s first tag team blood feuds since well, the Bucks v. Kenny and Hangman.
Jericho will have his “War Council” Wednesday on Dynamite and who knows where the inner circle goes from here. I’m waiting for MJF to eventually turn on this group, but I’d be interested to see Jericho ditch them altogether. It doesn’t seem like the Inner Circle respects Chris anymore and maybe he feels slighted. We also haven’t had a true babyface Jericho character in almost 4 years. He might be due.
Pac & Fenix win the Casino Tag Team Royale
TB: I’m a Butcher stan, so I was upset that he and The Blade didn’t get the win, but it was a great royale overall. The Butcher flashed with his brute strength, but that also ended up as his downfall in going for another double clothesline.
I thought Bear Country really popped and had some great moments. Jungle Boy had an awesome performance to eliminate Pac after falling into a 2v1, but Rey Fenix ended up victorious after a counter-palooza. I’m not sure that Pac and Fenix will defeat Young Bucks or even start up a rivalry, but it should make for an entertaining match.

Hikaru Shida retains Women’s title over Ryo Mizunami
TB: They were able to bring in an interesting storyline with Shida and Ryo Mizunami. The two have an interesting past from their time fighting in Asia and Mizunami’s renewed passion after featuring in an AEW PPV against Shida years back. The familiarity between them made for a great, hard hitting match. The post match theatrics were strange and maybe it’s just to open the door for multiple contenders. A fatal 4-way or something for the title may be coming in the near future…
JM: This was the most predictable outcome of the night to me. Bring a star over from Japan and build her up to get an impressive win for Shida. That’s the problem, is Shida has already kind of run through this division, who is left to truly challenge her? Is it Nyla again? Britt? Big Swole? The women’s division could use a headlining feud with their champion right now to get some heat on the division and the answer isn’t clear right now.
Miro & Kip Sabian defeat Orange Cassidy & Chuck Taylor
TB: AEW accomplished two main goals with this match: Miro showed off his power and how threatening he can be if he makes a title push as well as gave fuel for a Kip and Miro separation. Miro got the win after shoving Cassidy into Penelope and then proceeded to celebrate without the newlyweds. Give me a Miro run!
JM: This match showcased Miro’s mean streak nicely. He is a force to be reckoned with and if he stopped messing around he might be the most dangerous man in AEW. But he just really wants his butler back first.
Hangman Adam Page defeats Big Money Matt Hardy
TB: This was a fun little storyline for Hangman to help build his character and persona. It allowed him to get out of his comfort area and do some great work out of the ring as well. That’s just going to pay off in the long when he builds for another title push. An average match that you couldn’t complain much about.
JM: It’s clear the way AEW has booked Hangman since breaking up with Kenny that they want to keep him around the upper mid-card/main event scene. He’s been stuck in a will they won’t they with joining the Dark Order. Is it going to happen soon? Is he going to end up joining on with his beer-drinking friends FTR? Does he want more revenge against The Elite? They can go a lot of directions with Hangman but sky is the limit for him in the next year.
Scorpio Sky is the Face of the Revolution
TB: This was a very good match which was expected with the list of names that were in this one. Adding Ethan Page, who formerly had a run-in with Darby Allen, made for some extra intrigue. Each got got a few moments to shine and there’s some takeaways that they can spin into longer storylines. I don’t think Scorpio gets over Darby, but that’s gonna be fun on Wednesday!
JM: The perfect guy to win this match. We have some serious Penta and Cody beef starting up too, but Scorpio is a guy they could strap a rocket to and watch him go. Darby is going to be in a main event-level storyline with Sting, he can afford to lose the title so let’s see what Scorpio can do.
Sting & Darby Allen win Street Fight over Team Taz
TB: Wow, just wow! AEW’s production company deserves a round of applause for the camera work and editing that went into this one! The cinematics were amazing while making the entire thing feel like a cohesive fight.
The action itself was incredible! From table breaks, going through windows and everything else, these guys really put on a show. Sting still has it after earning his first win since 2015 and Darby Allen is the perfect guy for him to teach his tricks of the trade. I can’t wait to see what else is in store for these two hoodlums!
JM: This was MOTN in my opinion. You never know how cinematic matches will transfer over, but they did this really well. It still felt like a wrestling match, which sometimes gets lost in cinematic matches. But the ring in the backdrop of the warehouse made for some really dope shots and bumps for guys to take.
Sting looked incredible. He took some hard hits from Brian Cage, who got to show off some of his strength. But Sting’s moves looked crisp and they didn’t let him get too beat up. What a great way to utilize the Icon.
Omega retains AEW title over Jon Moxley
TB: So happy my feed cut out with 17 seconds on the timer then re-appeared with Eddie KO’d draped over Moxley. I’m still pretending the ring really blew up tbh….
But that’s for the better because this was an all-around great match! Tons of great points for both guys especially Moxley sacrificing himself off the side of the ring onto the barbed wire. Lots of the carnage and bleeding was well-organized and made the action feel all the more real. Plus the door is open for more between Omega and Moxley since Omega has not fairly beaten Moxley yet.
Overall, I’m extremely happy that AEW continues to push the boundaries with their matches. It’s just going to continue to grow the industry as a whole. Remember kids, “‘You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take’ -Wayne Gretzky -Micheal Scott.”
JM: What a dud way to end a thrilling match that was supposed to wrap up this chapter of Moxley-Omega. My first inclination is that the explosives honestly just didn’t go off the right way and it made for an anti-climactic ending. Regardless, that’s a nice way to chirp AEW but it doesn’t matter to this story in the long run.
What a great match though. It was brutal, thrilling, and a real home run in the long term for AEW for being creative in ways to blow off their big feuds. They want to go out of the box and that is fine with me, even if it falls a little flat. Fuck it. Try and try again. They will still have some great shots for video packages in the future.
Kenny knew that they had to put Mox down for good. Don Callis said as much a million times on commentary. My question is why didn’t Kingston get involved when the Good Brothers came out and attacked him? Mox should have known they were going to show up, and he didn’t have a plan against it until it was too late.
And it doesn’t feel like Mox is done with Kenny in the long term. Omega has still yet to beat Moxley without some sort of interference. I’m sure once Mox is back from being a proud papa for a little while, we know where his sights will be.
For Omega? Well if you haven’t heard of the Bullet Club yet, you’re about to find out.
