The Trade that Changed Two Franchises for the Better

BY: ZACH MCADOO

It is April 27, 2017, The 82nd annual NFL Draft is going by as the Buffalo Bills at No. 10 are about to make their selection.  That quickly changed as the Kansas City Chiefs offered a trade to try and move up in that slot.  The Buffalo Bills agreed to send the 10th overall selection to Kansas City in exchange for Kansas City’s 27th overall pick, 2017 3rd round pick, and their first-round pick for 2018.  Let’s take a look at how this trade has shaped out for the two teams.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs moved up to take a quarterback, but it wasn’t the one that many thought would be off the board second.  KC would draft Patrick Mahomes, a strong arm QB out of Texas Tech.  He would sit behind Alex Smith his rookie season getting to start one game when Smith was getting rest for the playoffs.  The next season though Mahomes became a shining star.  Patrick Mahomes would lead the Kansas City Chiefs to the one seed after throwing for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns.  Unfortunately for the Chiefs, and many other NFL fans, they would lose to the Patriots in the AFC Championship game.

The next year though would be their time.  Mahomes would lead them back to the AFC Championship this time getting the win.  In the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers would find themselves down 20-10 with about seven minutes to go.  That is when Magic Mahomes took over and helped KC score three touchdowns to win 31-20 and get KC their first Lombardi Trophy in fifty years.  This year they made it back to the AFC Championship against a familiar foe.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills would take Tre’davious White with the 27th overall pick. White is a cornerback out of LSU.  Since joining the Bills White has consistently been one of the best CBs in the NFL and was even a 1st-team all pro in 2019.  The other main piece that the Bills were helped by the Chiefs to get would be Josh Allen.  The seventh overall selection in the 2018 draft was another strong arm QB out of Wyoming.  A lot of Bills fans, including me, wondered if this was the right selection.  The Bills needed a QB, but why not Josh Rosen?  My doubts were quickly silenced in week three of the 2017 season.  The Bills went up to Minnesota to take on the Vikings.  Allen went back to throw a pass, but decided to tuck it and run instead.  About to be tackled by linebacker Anothny Barr, Allen instead decides to hurdle over him to pick up the first.  That jump made me a fan.  Allen has had some rocky games especially in his first two seasons, but has led the Bills to the playoffs in two of three of them including this season against the Kansas City Chiefs.

I think that this is one of those trades that rarely helps both teams.  The Chiefs got their future of the franchise in Mahomes and the Bills got two in White and Allen.  This Sunday they meet with a shot at the Super Bowl on the line.  Do the Chiefs go back to back or do the Bills get to their first Super Bowl in 27 years.
