3 NHL Plays for February 16, 2021

Wake’s Season Record: 20-16 (+.71 units)

After a long, long cold streak, I took yesterday to reset and didn’t put out an article. Today is the most important day of NHL betting of the year (for me). If I go worse than 2-1 I’ll be negative on the year, after starting out +8 units over my first three days of betting. It’s been a long fall down the side of this cliff, but I got some picks that’ll help me climb back up.

Today’s Free Money

New York Rangers/New Jersey Devils U5.5 (+105)

You could not pay me to watch this game. These teams play so slow and so sloppy and generate very few scoring chances. Imagine the third period of last night’s BUF vs NYI game, but for three straight periods. These are two of the bottom three teams in the NHL at hitting the over. Scott Wedgewood should get the nod for New Jersey, and Igor Shesterkin for the Rangers. I like the Rangers to win, but I love the under even more, at plus odds, no less.

Buffalo Sabres/New York Islanders O5.5 (EVEN)

Imagine last night but with Carter Hutton. That’s what we’re getting tonight. If the Sabres can muster more than 0 shots in a period, they’ll be able to score some goals. If they can’t, the Islanders could score six on their own against what looks no better than a Zamboni driver playing as an emergency back up. Ilya Sorokin should take Varlamov’s place between the pipes, and he won’t make highlight reel saves every single chance he gets. The Islanders and Sabres are both below average against the over, so this could be one to fade. But in games that Hutton starts, the over is 3-1 and there are an average of 7 goals scored.

Washington Capitals/Pittsburgh Penguins O6.5 (-120)

If the Capitals played with any sense of urgency two days ago, they would have chased Tristan Jarry out of the net. Jarry looked scatterbrained, like he had honestly never played in an NHL game before. Well he’s played in many, and he doesn’t often look great. All three games between these clubs have at least 7 goals this year, and they’re a combined 19-7 for the over this year. This game is gonna be a fun one, if you like rooting for goals.
